Living with Obesity and weight loss surgery

Series 02 Episode 14 - 07.03.2016

Over the decades, our ideal body shape and size has changed from the voluptuous screen goddesses such as Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, Bridget Bardot and Ursula Andress to the size zero celebrities of today like Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Paris Hilton, Madonna and Cheryl Cole.
Young women seeking a sense of self-esteem, self-identity and confident femininity are more vulnerable to society’s and medias seductive messages, suggesting that in order to be worthy, sexy, successful, powerful and happy, they must pursue the perfect body at all costs. But there is one aspect of medias messages which has largely been ignored, because of the continued interest with thin images. Its the promotion of unhealthy eating attitudes which has contributed to a national epidemic of obesity amongst men and women of all ages. The high prevalence of obesity in our adult population and the likelihood that these conditions will become more critical with the passing of time and the increase of weight, provides the rationale for more extreme measures (such as bariatric surgery, gastric bypass and the lap band procedure) to control the weight and lower the risks of obesity related illness.
